Play the Cards You're Dealt

“Mental health” isn’t just “mental”. Health is an arc. It’s not, “what does one doctor say?”. Health is an integrated, comprehensive concept.

Imagine healthcare as a board game. Let’s use the concept of Candy Land as an example.

There’s the forest of physical fitness. There is a mountain of endurance. To the right is a cave of cognitive development. Drones of Big Brother are flying around. The road you’re on is one of emotional intelligence and maturity. The weather is the psychological temperature. The unexplainable timing of coincidence is spirituality. When you collect a candy piece, you reach a milestone and gain awareness (hopefully). The durability of the board itself is functional wellness. The players you’re playing with can enhance the experience or frustrate it. Each roll of the dice is a new day.

So, when you’re pulled in the direction of emotion, step back and assess.

Ask yourself:

Is it your turn to roll the dice? If you get dealt a bad hand, what’s your next move? Will you hang your hat on what you can’t control - or play the heck out of the cards you're dealt?
