Break The Algorithm
Social Media can be a tool. It’s not all bad, it’s not all good. There’s a space for it when it comes to healing and education.
We unfollow, unfriend, mute, and block to protect our energy. We doom scroll, not even reading. We post pictures showcasing milestones and achievements. It is healthy to celebrate. Life is filled with yin and yang. The two exist for a reason. We use social to share our highlights, not our lows. What if we broke the algorithm and shared reality to forge a lighted path of encouragement that says, “I did this; you can too!”
Before you swipe through in a frenzy of addiction, pause. What are you looking for? What are you learning? Are you making a connection? What is being triggered? And why are you on your phone?
What feelings come up?
Jealousy? Be grateful for what you have.
Longing? Make a plan for what you want.
Are you scrolling to fill a void? Go to the gym. Go for a walk. Move your body. Phone a friend. Make a connection. Read. Journal.
Remember, pictures can be deceiving. No picture I’ve ever taken adequately captures the most beautiful moments of my life. Pictures never do it justice. Look at the moon. When photographed, the glow of the moon doesn’t translate to your screen. In reality, it’s a mesmerizing shape that pierces the darkness with its illumination. I’ve never been able to capture the beauty of the moon. It’s a wonder you have to see to appreciate.
Whatever feelings bubble up, name it to tame it. Know that the answers aren’t found in a solitary social scroll. Set time limits. If you’re looking for community, remember you’re looking at a snapshot of two lenses - one, through your phone, the other through what the person wants to share. People don’t always give you real. Me? Real is my love language. I keep it real, and I hope I always do. Break the algorithm and addiction; show real - and let real find you.
